At Obsidian Wine Company, we farm both ends of the Mayacamas Range in California and cooper our own barrels from the forests of Tokaj, Hungary. Our work exists at the intersection of humans and nature – an unpredictable place, risky, and even tenuous. We take these risks because the edges are where adventure happens, and the rewards are exhilarating, affirming, and educational. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our Estate Vineyard in Carneros, Napa Valley overlooking the Napa Marina was first planted in 1973 and became a top grower for the finest sparkling houses in the region. A generation later, we produce Chardonnay & Pinot Noir from this gravelly site known as Poseidon Vineyard. Obsidian Ridge, our Volcanic Estate Vineyard in the Red Hills of Lake County, is a vineyard like no other. Sitting at nearly 3,000 feet on the side of a volcano, this is the highest elevation vineyard in the North Coast, and the soils are comprised nearly entirely of black obsidian glass. The combination of these rocky slopes, massive daily temperature swings, and higher UV light exposure produces cabernet sauvignon of distinctly volcanic character. Our wines are aged exclusively in Hungarian oak from the cooperage we have owned for three decades. Trees grown in the forests of Tokaj in volcanic soils are 30% denser than French oak.

In the early 2020s, we began exploring the volcanics of the West Coast, partnering with leading vineyards to make a groundbreaking multi-state volcanic wine. On our journey we have learned, the beaten path is not for us. Never stop exploring, as interesting things happen at the edges.
