This scholarship is to honor Joey who, despite personal challenges, had the tenacity to pursue his dreams. In order to allow others to follow their dreams, this scholarship is to assist with expenses related to the Court of Master Sommeliers – Americas Advanced Exam. The scholarship amount is $1,398 spanning the Theory and Tasting/Practical Exam portions.
The Joey Zapata Scholarship Fund was set up by fellow sommeliers to honor their late friend, mentor and colleague.
Joey Zapata’s love of wine and passion for hospitality was known to whomever had the opportunity to meet him. His career spanned from time in southern California, Napa, and the Sacramento region. He touched the hearts of many; participating in several study and blind tasting groups. Joey was a Certified Sommelier who spent countless hours studying for his Advanced Exam (Court of Master Sommeliers – Americas). His battle with cancer, and the treatments he endured, did not stop his enthusiasm for learning – in fact, through the most challenging times, Joey spent hours escaping to regions in his book and in his glass. Joey had all the talent to one day become a Master Sommelier, but unfortunately was not given the time to do so, as he passed away in February of 2022.
A true passion for learning is how we would like his spirit to live on. In his name, we offer a scholarship to any Advanced Sommelier candidate through the Court of Master Sommeliers. May you have the tenacity to push through hard times and learn as much as you can.
